Kuala Lumpur has quietly become one of Southeast Asia’s most exciting escape room destinations. Whether you’re a first-timer looking for a fun weekend activity, a team-building planner, or a seasoned puzzle veteran chasing your next challenge, KL’s escape room scene delivers — across every genre, price point, and difficulty level.
This guide covers the best escape rooms in Kuala Lumpur right now, with honest picks for different player types so you can choose the right experience before you book.
What Makes KL’s Escape Room Scene Stand Out?
A few things set Kuala Lumpur apart from other cities in the region. First, the sheer variety: you’ll find everything from classic puzzle rooms and spy missions to full-blown horror immersion experiences with live actors. Second, price — KL escape rooms are excellent value compared to Singapore or Bangkok, with most rooms starting from around RM35–50 per person. Third, accessibility: the best venues are located in or near major shopping malls with direct LRT access, making them easy to slot into any itinerary.
Now, let’s get into the picks.
The Best Escape Rooms in Kuala Lumpur
1. Hauntu — Best for Horror Immersion
Locations: The Linc KL (Jalan Tun Razak) | The Curve (Mutiara Damansara)
If you want more than puzzles — if you want to be genuinely, memorably unsettled — Hauntu is the answer. Created by the same team behind Breakout Malaysia, Hauntu bills itself as Asia’s first immersive horror experience, and it earns that title.
This is not a traditional escape room. Instead of a puzzle-solving race against the clock, Hauntu drops your group into a fully scripted, actor-led horror story where your decisions shape the ending. The experience lasts around 60 minutes and draws heavily on Malaysian folklore, traditional art, and local ghost mythology — a genuinely unique touch that sets it apart from generic haunted-house concepts you’ll find elsewhere.
The two locations run different storylines. The Linc KL is set inside a haunted hotel steeped in paranormal rituals, with nods to classic Malaysian horror films. The Curve leans into rural folklore — think mystical dance academies, insidious creatures, and a traditional village house that hides something deeply wrong. Reviewers consistently highlight the quality of the set design, the committed performances of the actors, and the fact that the experience stays unsettling rather than cheap-jump-scare loud.
Important note: Hauntu is story-led, not puzzle-led. If you’re looking for a classic “find the clues, crack the code” experience, look at Breakout instead. But if you want something that will stay with you for days, Hauntu is the standout experience in KL.
- Best for: Thrill-seekers, horror fans, groups wanting something totally different
- Group size: Small groups recommended for maximum tension
- Book via: ihauntu.com or Klook
2. Breakout Malaysia — Best All-Rounder
Locations: NU Sentral (KL Sentral) | Avenue K (Ampang, near KLCC)
Breakout is the name most synonymous with escape rooms in Malaysia — and for good reason. The company pioneered the format here, and their two KL venues collectively offer over 16 uniquely themed rooms across a wide range of difficulty levels. If you’re visiting KL and want a reliable, well-run, polished escape room experience, Breakout is the safest pick.
NU Sentral (Level 4, directly connected to KL Sentral LRT) offers seven rooms including The Testament of Tesla, Terraform, Materia Medica, and Dreadnought. Avenue K (a short walk from KLCC LRT Station) has five rooms including Cerebrum, Project Fallout, Post Mortem, and the popular Chamber of Hocus.
All rooms run 55–60 minutes, accommodate 2–8 players, and come with pre-game briefing videos and a Gamemaster on standby. Phones are locked away beforehand — no cheating, no distractions. Pricing starts from around RM35–50 per person depending on group size, with discounts for students, civil servants, and Tuesday visits.
Breakout also offers a Spy Game variant at The Curve in PJ — a different experience using NPCs and mission-style gameplay for groups who want to try something beyond the standard room format.
- Best for: First-timers, families, mixed-ability groups, team building
- Group size: 2–8 players per room
- Book via: breakout.com.my or Klook
3. Escape Game KL — Best for Variety of Themes
Location: Level 7, Berjaya Times Square, Jalan Imbi, Bukit Bintang
One of the original escape room operators in Malaysia, Escape Game KL has the depth of experience to show for it. Located on Level 7 of Berjaya Times Square — itself a KL landmark — the venue runs a rotating roster of themed rooms that span a genuinely impressive range: the Amazon Forest, a haunted prison, a spooky castle, a fantasy land, and more.
What’s notable here is how well the themes integrate with the puzzles. The storylines aren’t just window dressing — the challenges inside each room are designed around the world you’re dropped into. Operating hours run Monday to Thursday from 11am to 8pm, and until 9pm on weekends. Pricing for a team of two starts from around RM80.
It’s worth booking ahead, especially on weekends — Berjaya Times Square sees heavy foot traffic and walk-in slots fill up fast.
- Best for: Players who want thematic variety, groups visiting Bukit Bintang
- Group size: Variable depending on room
- Contact: +60 3-4819 2852
4. Fifthroom — Best for Physical Challenges
Location: Basement 1, MyTown Shopping Centre, Jalan Cochrane
Fifthroom, based in MyTown Shopping Centre near Cheras, stands out for one key reason: it demands more of you physically than most KL escape rooms. Rooms involve climbing, crawling, and navigating obstacles — not just brainwork. This makes it particularly good for active groups who find pure puzzle-solving a little passive.
The flagship rooms include The Barber — set in a creepy abandoned barbershop where you need to escape before nightfall — and Creepy Toystore, which does exactly what it promises. Some rooms require players to sign a waiver form before entering, which should tell you everything about the intensity level. Fifthroom also offers online escape games for remote teams, a feature introduced during the pandemic that stuck around for good reason.
Operating hours are 10am–10pm daily.
- Best for: Active groups, horror enthusiasts, players who want something more physical
- Group size: Check website for room-specific limits
- Location tip: MyTown is a 10-minute drive or taxi from KL Sentral
5. MAZE Escape Room — Best for Hardcore Players
Location: Petaling Jaya (Bandar Sunway) — easily reachable from KL
Technically based just outside the KL city boundary in Petaling Jaya, MAZE is worth including because it represents the cutting edge of what escape rooms can be. Created in collaboration with a Chinese escape game company, MAZE is one of the largest escape room venues in Malaysia, and its design philosophy is unmistakably more ambitious than most competitors.
The rooms lean heavily into horror aesthetics with spine-chilling set design, role-play elements, and — in some rooms — costume changes and NPC characters who appear mid-game. Themes like Dancing, The Ghost Coffin, and Old House are designed to disorient and disturb as much as challenge. This isn’t a venue for beginners or the easily spooked. For experienced escape room players looking for their next obsession, it’s required visiting.
Opening hours: 11am–11pm daily.
- Best for: Experienced players, hardcore horror fans, large groups
- Address: No. 16, Jalan PJS 11/18, Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya
6. Mission-Q Escape Room — Best for Large Groups
Location: Sunway Pyramid, Petaling Jaya
Mission-Q is another Petaling Jaya pick that KL visitors consistently make the trip for, mainly because it accommodates up to 10 players per room, making it one of the best options in the Greater KL area for large groups, corporate outings, or multi-family trips.
The venue runs five rooms spanning horror, mystery, and adventure storylines, each designed with varying degrees of physical activity required — useful if your group has mixed energy levels. The Harvest in particular has a reputation for making players sweat, both from tension and exertion. Located in Sunway Pyramid, it’s easy to pair with a meal or a visit to one of the mall’s other attractions.
Operating hours: 10am–10pm daily.
- Best for: Large groups, corporate team building, Sunway area visitors
- Group size: Up to 10 players

Tips for Visiting Escape Rooms in KL
Book in advance. KL’s most popular rooms especially Hauntu and Breakout — fill up quickly on weekends and public holidays. Book at least 48 hours ahead via the venue’s official website or Klook to secure your slot and sometimes access a discount.
Arrive early. Most venues require you to check in 10–15 minutes before your session. Late arrivals don’t get extra time.
Dress comfortably. For venues like Fifthroom and MAZE that involve physical movement, wear flat shoes and clothes you can move in. Heels are a bad idea.
Don’t be afraid of hints. Most KL rooms allow you to call for hints from your Gamemaster. There’s no shame in using them — the goal is to have fun and finish the story, not to suffer in silence.
Go on a weekday if you can. Crowds are thinner, staff have more time for your group, and some venues (like Breakout) offer weekday discounts. Tuesday visits at Breakout, for example, come with price reductions.
Group size matters. Bigger isn’t always better. For horror experiences like Hauntu, smaller groups (3–4 people) tend to be more immersive. For puzzle rooms with many simultaneous challenges, 5–6 players is often the sweet spot.
Who Are KL Escape Rooms Good For?
Tourists: Escape rooms make excellent rainy-day or evening activities. Breakout’s locations at NU Sentral and Avenue K are both a short walk from major landmarks and transport hubs. Most rooms are conducted in English.
Corporate groups: Breakout and Mission-Q both have experience hosting corporate team-building sessions. Escape rooms are one of the most effective team-building activities available — they require genuine communication, delegation, and collaboration under pressure.
Families with kids: Breakout explicitly welcomes families, with age-appropriate rooms and a family-friendly atmosphere. Kids under 7 play free; those under 12 need to be accompanied by an adult.
Horror enthusiasts: KL genuinely excels here. Between Hauntu’s actor-led Malaysian horror narrative, Fifthroom’s waiver-required rooms, and MAZE’s cinematic horror sets, the city offers horror escape experiences that are among the best in Southeast Asia.
Getting Around to KL’s Escape Rooms
Most KL escape rooms are strategically placed inside or adjacent to major shopping malls, and most of those malls are on the LRT network. Breakout NU Sentral is directly connected to KL Sentral Station. Breakout Avenue K is a short walk from KLCC LRT. The Linc KL (Hauntu) is accessible by Grab from most central locations in around 10–15 minutes.
For Sunway-based venues (Mission-Q, MAZE), the easiest option is a Grab from KL Sentral, typically 20–30 minutes depending on traffic. Sunway Pyramid also has its own bus connections from several KL hubs.
Final Word
Kuala Lumpur’s escape room scene has something genuinely special about it, the mix of Malaysian cultural storytelling, high production values, and accessible pricing creates experiences that are hard to find anywhere else in the region. Whether you’re after Hauntu’s actor-driven folklore horror, the polished puzzle craft of Breakout, or the physical intensity of Fifthroom and MAZE, KL delivers.
If you’re planning a trip to Malaysia and want to add an escape room to your itinerary, Breakout Malaysia is the most reliably excellent starting point for most visitors. Horror fans should put Hauntu at the top of the list without hesitation.
